The Hamburger Sonata or Sonata in G major was composed in 1786 in Hamburg. This sonata is unusual in that it is comprised of only two movements, Allegretto and Rondo, instead of the typical three- or four-movement sonata. C.P.E. Bach's compostitional style became known as emfindsamer Stil or the "sensitive" style. Composers of this style tried to portray a wide range of contrasts to achieve expression in their music unlike during the Baroque Era in which one movement typically portrayed one affect. The Hamburger Sonata is typical of the emfindsamer Stil contrasting long lyrical passages with short abrupt articulated passages. The Allegretto is comprised of two repeated sections followed by a transitional passage that segues directly into the Rondo. The Rondo is marked Presto and is played rather quickly. It opens with the theme being presented twice and typical of a rondo-form, the theme repeats itself throughout interspersed with contrasting themes. C.P.E. Bach's other works for flute include four flute concertos, several sonatas for flute and basso continuo, five trio sonatas for flute, violin, and basso continuo, and a solo sonata.
