Carl Phillip Emanual Bach, the second surviving son of Johann Sebastion Bach, was a German composer and keyboardist. Historically, C.P.E. Bach is considered to fall in between the Baroque and Classical Eras. He spent nearly 30 years in Berlin in the service of Frederick the Great who was a flute player and also a composer. Among his colleagues at the court was Johann Joachim Quantz, a flutist, composer, and author of On Playing the Flute. C.P.E. Bach authored a similar work for keyboard, Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments. After being relieved of his duties at the court, C.P.E. Bach retained a position in Hamburg as the Director of Music at the Johanneum. He replaced Georg Philipp Telemann, his godfather, after his death. His new duties included being the Canto of the Latin School and musical director of Hamburg's five main churches. Because of his position in Hamburg, C.P.E. Bach became known as the "Hamburg Bach."
