Also don't forget his Motets. They are religious pieces with a very complex polyphony of voices.

Hi!
Just new to this site. HUGE Bach fan. Have to agree that the Motets are FANTASTIC. Actually just sung two of them in a choir I sing in. Singet Dem Herrn and Derr Geist Hilft. Singet Dem Herrn is an epic - the Halelulia is so memorable, though - absolute genius. Probably the best live experience I have had with Bach is with the motets - heard the Bach Collegium Japan perform Singet Dem Herrn, Jesu meine Freude and other things when I was over there (I'm from Australia).

Also worth mentioning the B Minor Mass - awesome music. Not sure if anyone recommended that one yet. Lots of fun. The Eliot Gardiner recoding is amazing.

Would love to talk Bach with anyone - particularly about the motets.

Singet Dem Herrn seems like a really hard piece to sing... especially that "ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha" part.

Yes. Singet Dem Herrn is difficult. Particularly to do well. Requires and extremely grounded vocal technique. All those "ha, ha, ha, ha" bits (which I suppose one would call melismas).

However, I am often surprised to see how many amateur or even youth/high school choirs give it a crack - and don't do a bad job either!

My favourite recording is the one by the Scholars Baroque ensemble. A good Naxos recording. Once voice per part. VERY nice. Cool

Also difficult because of the vocal melismas (mind you nearly all of bach has loads of melismas) is the B Minor Mass- The Osanna for example. Awesome stuff.

Okay and now I'm babbling.

Yes I have the same recording! Finally some authentic Bach motet! I just wish the gamba was slightly more clear.
