I never heard of the Ode to a Tobacco Smoker.
I have heard of the coffee cantata, where he praises the life giving qualities of coffee. Wacky backy? No ... if you are into drugs then the best thing you can do is read more about the Romantic poets, most of whom were addicted to opium (and they all seemed to have consumption/tuberculosis ... does anyone know why this is?).
Having said that, am I the only one who has noted that some of Bach's music is slightly trippy? The way, for instance, subjects of fugues branch off into multiple, organic patterns and the way some of his music seems to take your mind to another level of consciousness. It seems almost psychedelic, although in a very disciplined and orderly way.
I think the best VISUAL representation of a fugue is a fractal pattern (one theme repeted again and again with an infinite variety of variations branching off), which computers can generate with a mathematical equation, and I have also thought they looked quite psychedelic.

Steppenwolf,
Can you provide us a web link to an appropriate fractal pattern or images you see in Bach's music? Some members would find that very interesting I think, to see how you hear the music in a visual form.

This is all very interesting, but I don't think Bach was high on anything. I believe the reason Bach's music is so mathematically "perfect" (although I'm no expert) is because he dedicated his life to the serice of God and God gave him the ability to write this "perfect" music.

The Coffee Cantata? Where can one get a recording of this? Question Question Confused #morning

Starbucks should monopolize on this! Wink But I have some difficulty believing that Bach was loaded but I don't have any real basis for saying that other that I can't imagine creating so many brilliant and genius works under the influence.

Imagine the compositions Bach might have created with the influence of LSD.

It's difficult to imagine just how different it might sound. It's also hard to believe Albert Hofmann is still alive at 102 yrs. old.
