Well, Walter Carlos may be a bit of a niche topic, but his work is worth discussion.

He was the first to do classical recordings using multiple layers of the Moog synthesizer. I believe his first release was "Switched on Bach". His album came out when I was in Junior High in the 70's and it blew my whole world of musical thought open at the time. I've worked full time in music production my whole life and Walter Carlos was a big influence on me.

Sometimes you'll see listings for "Walter" or "Wendy", it is one and the same. Mr. Carlos had a sex change and changed his name to Wendy. That in itself is an interesting story if you have a chance to find it on the web.
